Nathan Burtch has served as the GIS Specialist at the Finger Lakes Institute since October 2006. As the GIS Specialist, Nathan uses various spatial analyses to assist the FLI staff and affiliates with ascertaining development impacts upon water quality, watershed planning, land use change over time and other environmentally centered research topics. He also assists students and faculty with GIS technologies pertaining to their own research. One of Nathan’s major initiatives is to broaden and maintain the GIS portion of the FLI website. Nathan will add geospatial technologies and concepts into future FLI community and educational outreach programs.
Originally from Big Rapids, Mich., Nathan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 2004 from Western Michigan University with dual majors in Geography and Comparative Religion and a minor in Applied Statistics. In 2006, Nathan earned his Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning from University at Buffalo, specializing in GIS Technologies and Environmental Planning. His Masters project at UB used GIS to analyze where the transport of hazardous waste shipments in the city of Niagara Falls was occurring from 2001 to 2005.
Prior to joining the Finger Lakes Institute, Nathan worked at the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition (NITTEC) as a GIS Intern. While at UB, he was a research assistant, aiding professors with spatial research on topics such as amenity-based development, second-home ownership patterns, public transportation usage by the elderly population and service-sector job development. He has also served as a teaching assistant for the Masters level introductory GIS course and the Planning Methods course at UB. Nathan was a Student GIS Coordinator at WMU Landscape Services, focusing mainly on the development of a campus-wide tree inventory.
