Invasive Species and Diseases

  • Viral hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) Virus is a serious pathogen of fresh and saltwater fish that is causing an emerging disease in the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada. VHS virus affects fish of all size and age ranges, but does not pose any threat to human health. Conesus Lake, the westernmost Finger Lake, had a confirmed outbreak of VHS in 2006, which killed between 50-100 walleye. Skaneateles Lake is the most recent Finger Lake to be inflicted by VHS with an outbreak in June 2007.
  • Skaneateles Lake May Be Next Stop for New Invasive Plant
Water chestnut threatens spread to the Finger Lakes region after an infestation was found in Otisco Lake, the easternmost Finger Lake, in August 2006.
