Regional Partnerships

The FLI will serve as a clearinghouse for environmental information about the Finger Lakes and the surrounding region. Outreach programs will focus on K-12 education, the general public, and educational links through our regional partners. Such linkages include:

  • Creating and maintaining an ongoing public lecture series
  • Consulting on the development of educational exhibits
  • Developing and coordinating outreach programs and opportunities for K-12 students and community organizations
  • Developing programs for alumni/alumnae and other adults
  • Fostering student internships to work with public and private organizations
  • Publicizing the pertinent information on the Internet

Current FLI Partnership Initiatives

Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association

It is the purpose of the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association to study and to inform the members and the public about ways to conserve, improve and protect the water resources and the environment of Seneca Lake and its watershed. The Association strives to preserve and enhance the varied landscape within the watershed by supporting improvements to technology and patterns of development that do not have an adverse impact on our environment.

Finger Lakes-Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance

The purpose of the Finger Lakes - Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance is to protect and enhance water resources by promoting the sharing of information, data, ideas, and resources pertaining to the management of watersheds in New York's Lake Ontario Basin;fostering dynamic and collaborative watershed management programs and partnerships; and emphasizing a holistic, ecosystem-based approach to water quality improvement and protection.

Finger Lakes Land Trust

The Finger Lakes Land Trust work involves establishing nature preserves, holding conservation easements, educating for responsible stewardship, and working cooperatively with private groups and public agencies. They are a non-profit organization supported by donations from members and grants received from private foundations and government agencies. Through a variety of means, they have provided protection for thousands of acres of wetlands, streams, meadows, forests, farmlands and shrublands throughout the Finger Lakes Region. These lands are rich with a diversity of wildlife and plants.

The Nature Conservancy -Central and Western NY Chapter

The Nature Conservancy is an international membership organization committed to the global preservation of natural diversity. Its mission is to identify and preserve the best remaining examples of plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and water they need to survive. To date the Central and Western New York Chapter has protected more than 15,500 acres, and owns and manages 32 nature sanctuaries in Central and Western New York.

New York Energy Smart Communities

New York Energy Smart Communities is a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) program under the umbrella of the United States Department of Energy’s (DOE) Rebuild America Program. The program is composed of stakeholders committed to increasing energy efficiency. The Finger Lakes Institute supports a partnership agreement with New York Energy Smart Communities and Rebuild America to increase energy efficiency and address energy resource challenges that have the potential to increase affordability and spur economic growth, community development, and sustainability within the Finger Lakes region.

Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management

The Finger Lakes PRISM seeks to reduce the spread and impact of invasive species through coordinated prevention, detection, and control measures throughout Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Livingston, Madison, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Tompkins, Tioga, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates counties.
