The Finger Lakes Institute will host an afternoon tour of a Cayuga County dairy farm and composting facility beginning at noon on Friday, July 13. Transportation will be provided to the farm on Route 34B in King Ferry, where six generations of the family of Tim Fessenden have raised dairy cows and grown fruits and vegetables, while working to protect the land and water resources. That emphasis on quality is reflected in their Tender Loving Compost, a retail outlet that sells dairy cattle manure compost for gardening, landscaping and other uses. The tour will follow the steps in processing the manure. Participants will also have a first-hand look at the 1,050-head dairy farm and its nutrient management system. Those interested will gather at the Finger Lakes Institute, 601 S. Main St., shortly before noon; the group is scheduled to return by 4 p.m. The program is free and open to the public; registration is requested by calling ext. 4382 or e-mailing fli@hws.edu.
