Some 300 top high school students and another 200 to 300 team advisers, guests and resource professionals from across the United States and Canada are now on campus for the 2007 Canon Envirothon, which runs through Saturday, Aug. 4.

"We are delighted to be welcoming so many bright, promising students to Hobart and William Smith Colleges, said Colleges President Mark D. Gearan. "The Finger Lakes - and our own Finger Lakes Institute - offer numerous ways for these students to learn about the world around them, and our faculty and staff are pleased to be a part of that.

Canon U.S.A. has sponsored North America's largest high school environmental education competition since 1997. The event encourages students to learn more about natural resources through exposure to basic resource management and ecological principles.

"The Colleges, on the shores of Seneca Lake - the largest and deepest of the 11 Finger Lakes - are an ideal location for this educational competition, which will have 'New York Tap-estry' as its theme, emphasizing the waterways and water resources available in Empire State, said Eileen Dyson Peterson, Information Outreach Coordinator.

The teams of five students each, representing many states and Canadian provinces, will compete in a hands-on competition testing their knowledge of natural resource conservation in the areas of soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a current environmental issue.
