Through the Finger Lakes Institute, the Colleges will co-sponsor a two-day discussion on how environmental issues are impacting our economy. Topics such as alternative energy, invasive species in our waters, tourism , and redeveloping brownfields will be discussed at "Unifying Economic Development and the Environment," Thursday, Sept. 27 and Friday the 28 at the Burgundy Basin Inn in Pittsford. Marion Balyszak, director of the Finger Lakes Institute, will be among those offering welcoming remarks; the featured speaker at lunch Thursday will be Sen. Michael F. Nozzolio L.H.D. '07, on "Upstate Now." Morning sessions will address The Pulse of the Region, the City of Auburn's Blueprint for Economic Revival, People and the Land: Impacts on Water Quality; Lake Ecosystems as an Indicator of Health and Change; Invasive Species: They're Here, They're Coming … Now What?; and Local Action to Sustain Watersheds. Afternoon sessions will include Municipal Wastewater and Stormwater Management in Upstate NY: Aging Infrastructure, Dwindling Federal Dollars; Forging Our Energy Future; Connecting Community and Agriculture; Tourism and Environment: A Winning Combination; Liabilities Turned Opportunities: Transforming Brownfields and Toxic Waste Sites; and Building Sustainable Communities. Closing Remarks, "Upstate Looking Forward," will be offered by Dan Gundersen, Upstate Co-Chair of the Empire State Development Corporation, who will be available for informal dialogue at the reception afterward. The second day of the conference, Friday, Sept. 28, will feature a guided tour allowing a first-hand experience of some regional assets unifying economic development and environmental protection. Participants will leave the Inn at 9 a.m. and visit the Frito Lay distribution center, a Wegmans Food Market, the Monroe County Recycling Center, Chevy Place, The Vineyard and Newcroft Park.
