Bruce Gilman will describe his recent "Voyage of Discovery to the Galapagos Islands, still one of the world's premiere scientific research destinations, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2 in the FLI Classroom, 601 S. Main St. Gilman, a professor of environmental conservation/outdoor recreation at Finger Lakes Community College, will describe his trip this past spring to the island group in the Pacific Ocean, off the western coast of South America. Like so many before him, Gilman quickly became a student of the Galapagos' natural history. He walked in Charles Darwin's footsteps exploring the marine and terrestrial environments. From Gilman's encounter with the "beach master to his amazement with the frigate birds and his appreciation of the subtle interaction among Opuntia cactus and island creatures, these islands made a lasting impression. The talk will include a description of how these Equatorial islands are subject to all-too-familiar human impacts as well as a colorful introduction to the ecology of the Galapagos and a thoughtful discussion of human domestication of landscapes. Gilman holds a bachelor's degree from St. John Fisher College in Rochester and his master's and doctorate from State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. The Finger Lakes Institute draws together researchers from several colleges and universities in the area to study the unique environment that is the Finger Lakes.
